As you might know i had the Cam Variator replaced some days ago with a lot smoother running and a little more torque as the result.
Of course i was interrested in how the variator worked ( why i did not !) and tooke the old one apart.

My comments to the pictures :
(Lets call the parts 1-4 from the left)
The spring goes between part 2 and 4 as the are shown.
The oilpressure goes through part 4 and pushes part 2 against part 4 collapsing the spring.
When part 2 is moving it forces a twist to part 4
because of the slanted traces in part 1 and 2.
When revs and oilpressure drops the spring brings back part 2 to idle possition.
The parts looks almost like new and feels very accurately fitting into each other. Of course the O-ring on part 4 may be worn but it doesn't show.
The spring may be worn ( not able to push back part 2 ) This could be the reason why the ticking noise when idle.
If the spring is the problem it would be easy to replace it.
