Today I put oil in the gearbox. Needed to buy a 12mm allen key fitment for my ratchet. This post is really to warn everybody.
My car has a full service history from Alfa (first 3 years) and then from an Alfa "specialist". I needed to put nearly 1 litre of oil into the box !!!!!
Given that the capacity of the box is 2 litres, I would suggest that the oil level has not been checked/topped up when the car has been serviced.
It took me ages to loosen the filler bolt on the box, it felt like it hadn't been removed for a while (if at all !!!). The car was serviced last December (before I bought it), so be wary.
It won't effect new or low mileage cars, but seeing as our Alfas can be 10 years old with high mileage, the gearbox will suffer. Topping up gearbox oil is something most car owners will never do 'cos they don't know it needs to be done.
The point is.....check your gearbox oil level and top it up.
