Hello everyone, I have the following question. When my engine is warm and it runs stationair then I am hearing a low bumping/thumping noise! You have to listen carefully but it is there! My oil pressure is at this time 2-3 bar! What can this noise be!!! P.S. he is also sweating a little bit oil at the carter pan!
THAT's IT! The Cam variator. It does sound a little bit dieslel! Yak! I checked out the forum about this cam variator, but still some questions? Where do I have to find it and what does it look like! And what is its function exactly? And can I drive further when I decide not to replace it?
My Alfa has driven 88.950 km and is nine years old!
Hi 1,8 TS Lusso
I saw in the General section that your car is a ’92 1,8 TS which doesn’t have the infamous Variator type of the 16 valve engine (and not the tooth belts either). Your engine is of the earlier type and have a different and much more reliable valve timing system; chain drive for the cams and a different Variator on the inlet camshaft.
If the timing gear of your type of engine is noisy, it’s usually the chain tensioner that is worn or in cases of a high mileage (many kms) worn chain and/or chain wheels. Have a Alfa specialist (who know the early type of engine) listen to the engine.
Good luck finding the fault.
I am speculating here, but can't it be just the timing chain that needs to be tensioned?
I don't know the TS 8v engine at all, but on my old Giulietta the timing chain must be checked, say, every 20000 km and tensioned if necessary. I have heard a lot of those old Alfas sounding awfull with loose/sagging chains. They usually wear 3 rows of "tracks" inside the head casting if not properly adjusted.
I suggest you just check the timing chain.
Thanks everyone for replying...I am going to my alfa dealer tomorrow to check the sound out! I hope it's something little! We will see! I do not know that much from my Alfa yet, but I am learning (and willing to learn everything)! So I will keep asking questions! P.S. were can I find something about my engine on the internet?? Does someone know?
Thanks again Ben
