smell of fuel

hi, just acquired a 145 with 1.8 8v engine installed and under acceleration you can smell fuel but when driving normally this disapears. The 'collector' box at the bulk-head is plastic and has a 'popper' valve to stop pressure building and cracking the box and i wondered if this was causing the problem. There is absolutely no evidence of leaks at all and am at wits end to find out what the problem could be. I'll try to post a photo to show what i mean.

Is it a 145 or a 155? 145 didn't have a 8v 1.8...

If it's a 155 then check the condition of the rubber fuel hoses where they are connected to the metal pipes that emerge at the bulkhead (the metal pipes end around "down the back of the engine" level and rubber hoses take over) .. all the way to the fuel regulator/fuel rail.

These pipes can crack with age and/or can seep fuel at the joints. You'll get a waft when accelerating since the pipes are under most pressure then.
