1998 155 2.0 16V TS Super Suspension

Apparently the Super had electronically controlled dampers.

Could someone please explain what this consists of and how it works (by button or by engine ECU)

Thank you

Never owned a super myself but i'm pretty sure that's incorrect. I believe the only difference the super had for suspension was a slightly longer spring (20mm?) allowing a more comfortable drive.

Not 100% sure but i think supers were basically the same as a standard 155 except for the more comfy suspension, wood and velour seats

Thank you for the reply. I found the information on the Wikipedia page that the Sport had a stiffer and lower suspension and the Super had the wood finish and the electronically controlled dampers.

Not only wikipedia but a few others too...

Even if the Super is not fitted with it. How does it work and do you activate it via a switch or is it automatically controlled by the engine ECU

The Q4 and some V6s with the option were fitted with electronic dampers - just a button in the cabin with Automatic or Sport - Sport basically stiffen up the dampers.
Doubt most systems work these days though. More likely the dampers would have been replaced by newer ones.

Thanks Alfa Jack

The 155 v6 ti (replica sold as a production car) was fitted with an apparent Abach suspension (dont know the correct name) and a sports kit.

Maybe it's Eibach... Dono, anyway... Which is the best Aftermarket suspension kit to fit to a 155 that's fairly adjustable?

If you are interested at all, it works by using ferro fluids in the shocks which become less viscous when an electrical charge is applied to them.

My V6 super didn't have electronic controlled suspension, but I suspect that'd be an optional extra that not many people would have bought.

I replaced the shocks with Bilstein B6 dampers and Pi springs.

I think, but don't quote me on this, the Q4 did get this shock setup as standard.

I'm not sure that the 155 system was that advanced , though .

I had the option on one of my V6s , and it either :
a) didn't work very well , or
b) was fubar'd .
Essentially there was a Sport/Auto button just behind the Foglight & Window lock buttons by the handbrake
Which lit up .
And that was all .

I'm unsure, all I know is that it was electronically controlled but have never been able to find out in which way it was done as their are a few different techniques. Ferro fluids in suspension are fairly recent so I am probably wrong & they used the simple valve/actuator method.

Alfa 156 v6 with 3.0 24v

I had a K plate silver narrow body V6 with the electronically controlled dampers back in '95 or 96.

Given the car was still quite new back then and not too many miles, it all worked and seemed to do the job well. There was a noticeable stiffening of the ride when sport mode was selected

I eventually replaced the dampers with Koni's I think, so had an opportunity to see how they worked. Each damper had an electronic actuator on it which seemed to be a tiny steppen motor that switched a valve from soft to hard. it was a while ago so if I am having a senior moment now, please say, but I think thats how it worked.

Apparently no wide bodies had this set up (so anything pretty much from early 95), but Alfa seemed to use up boxes of left over bits, so I guess there is a possibility of a set coming through on a wide body!!

Sounds like they made a few in that Spec - I had K460 MGK for a while - wasn't the same one was it???

Bought in around '96, sold on in around '99 I think
