converting fog lights to low beam

hi lads has anybody converted or changed their foglights in the bumper to a regular low beam? The idea is to gain longer distance light during winter driving. Does the clear glass cover over the bulb have anything to do with it or is it simply a case of changing the bulb type? this evening light could have been better, I will replace the main bulbs tomorrow but the idea is just to get some extra distance with the light.
Any ideas?

fog light lenses/reflectors are designed to spread the beam pattern out and keep it low. They will make awful low beam lights.

agreed. I adjusted mine so they point more down to avoid dazzling on coming cars and have them on on my way to work down single lane country roads - the extra width from the light spread really helps. HIDs can be had for a reasonable price off ebay, not too far off the price of decent replacement bulbs
