Help 155 spluttering

Hi guys,

My 155 has recently started to splutter and cough when either at low revs or when my foot is not on the accelerator pedal when driving at speed. For instance if i'm driving along and take my foot off the acccelerator, and then re apply the pedal there will be a lag before it starts to accelerate and it sounds as if the engine is being 'suffocated'. Sounds almost as though I am starting to run out of petrol, although there is plenty of petrol in the car. When the revs are above about 3000rpm there is no problem it seems, but when below is splutters, could this be a problem with the fuel injectors? Also, when the car is at idle sometimes the revs will jump up and down a lot, which led me to believe the idle control valve is playing up.

Has anyone had this problem before or know what it could be? Should I clean the contacts on the ICV and also buy some injector cleaner for the fuel?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Tim

Remove the ICV and clean it, that normally helps.

Squirt a load of carb cleaner into the ICV leave it to soak, keep doing that till the fluid runs clear.

On the throttle intake :-

There are 2 Torx type screws holding it on, be careful not to split the green gasket.

I took the ICV off for cleaning a couple of months ago and did replace the gasket at the same time. Whilst it's not absolutely necessary to replace, it is at least still available from the dealers.

The Part Number is 60606998 and costs £1.06

I have the same problem. Replaced the ICV, no good, replaced the lambda, no good. Removed the throttle body & cleaned it, no good. Infact I would say mine is even worse now. Revs upto 2k & bounces up & down for now reason.

when were the sparks last done? You could try pouring in 250ml of parafin to your tank and then run it close to empty, could just be dirt in the system and the parafin helps to clean the system. Also there is a solenoid close to the sparks that is to do with oil flow (cant remember the name) but if its dirty it can cause your problem, it can be easily removed and cleaned

Hi guys,

Thanks for all of the suggestions, i'm going to try and clean the ICV and insert some injector cleaner. Whilst it is still drivable I think it is getting slightly worse and is very irritating. When it does happen I can stop it by pressing the pedal fully to the floor, if that helps at all!? Failing the ICV and cleaner option I think the plugs may need a looking at.

Weird, I have exactly the same problem and I'm just going outside to fix it.

The relays by the battery can cause problems like yours.
Carefully remove them and clean the contacts

Also check the connections on the battery, on mine the secondary cables are bolted on to the top of the battery connection and that has come loose.

The relay problem is common on 155s, at my last MoT I had to reseat the relay to get the car through the emission test.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I was just wondering that should you always disconnect the battery leads before you remove and clean the mentioned relays? Or is it enough if you just have the car turned off?

I'm experiencing the same sort of problems with my car; starts very poorly (if at all) on first try and doesn't really react properly to the gas pedal being pressed quickly at low rpm's. Works quite fine even at the lower range once the engine warms up and especially if you floor it for a while and/or drive at higher rpm's. Before that it feels like the engine is running on 3 cylinders.
