I can't get my rear brakes to pass the MOT. Even Dr Death, the MOT man is at a loss..
A quick summary:
Rear brakes was giving me 80kg.. should be 130 so we were waaaay off. Handbrake was also only just about working... so it all looked a bit bleak back there.
The Doctor suggested the brake compensator was FUBAR'd (it was!) so I fitted a new one.
I also put new pads and new handbrake cables.. cleaned the sliding pins and ran the beast around to get it all bedded in. It felt a bit better.. the retest showed up a useful improvement to the rear brakes, no difference on the handbrake and still not overall good enough for the MOT.
The Doctor suggested new rear calipers even though mine were just 4 years old and pretty good, I thought.. but logically, there wasn't much left to try.
A few quids later... the new calipers are now giving 100kg... dead even both sides.. but still too weedy for Dr Death. What's going on?
I can make sure the spring on the compensator is okay (new one ordered already in case mine is too weedy)... but someone remind me how much weight I'm supposed to dangle from it..
Also... if that doesn't do it, what else can I try? Doc' suggested the brake lines.. but my calipers are dead even both sides so I'm not convinced but given that the calipers, cables, pads, compensator and even the fluid are all new... What's left?
Front brakes is good and locks up the ABS so I think the servo' must be okay..
