It doesn't do any harm to leave it.. but if the cam-belts are due for a change any time soon, change the belts, tensioner, pulleys (possibly the water pump depending on mileage) and the variator all at the same time. They are all accessed and driven via the cam-belt and since you'll have this area in bits already, it won't cost much more to fit new items.
Any of these othe items failing will wreck your engine so it makes no sense to do the variator and leave "old" everything else.
