The biggest difference in theengines is actually the coils, or more technically which plugs the coils fire, in the 155 engines the coils would fire one plug of each size in 2 different cylinders, so if a coil pack was failing you'd barely notice any misfire, in the later 156 engine the coil pack fire both plugs in the same cylinder, so if a misfire occurs you relly do feel it. Apart from that it was minor things that changed like the cam lobe profile, the sump parts and basically just improviing the other moving parts (except the cam belt which halved it's life). The ECU's are different too, but you can swap the engines between them.
