I'm dismantling my engine to replace the head gaskets (one or both is FUBAR'd) along with the water pump, cambelt and tensioner while I'm down there (the pump and tensioner seem to be the originals
I'm also cleaning up anything alloy as I go... polishing anything that needs polishing, painting anything that needs painting and dumping all the rusty screws and fasteners for new ones... so the beast will effectively be not quite "new" but at least in pretty good order by the time I'm finished.
At the moment I'm trying to take the front head off the block. Usual story there is that the manifold has become rust-welded to it and so I've disconnected it from the exhaust at the header. Rear bank is likely to be the same.
Having a lump of manifold attached to the head makes it "impossible" to lift the head off the block (the front bank has no clearance to the front valance... the rear, who knows?
I'll also have to somehow undo the crank pulley to fit the new water pump which will be a Mo-Fo (41mm nut been rusting in place for 14 years... You get the idea).
Rather than arse about trying to dismantle everything in situ', I think the best thing (easiest for me) will be to drop the engine out with whatever ancillaries I can't remove so I can attack it on the bench.
I figure this will be the last time the heads/gaskets/pump are going to get looked at, so I want to do the best job I can.
But I won't be able to drop the engine out on my own.. need someone who "knows what they're doing" (i.e brawny muscles, proper tools and the lifting gear) but they obviously have to be able to do the job on my drive.
Anyone know a mobile mech' who can just drop me donkey out?
Obviously once I've reassembled the beast (I even bought new head studs
16 of them @ £7 a go
) the fella (lass?) will have to also pop it back in.
