I've descided to put one foot slight out side the Alfa camp and buy a New Fiat 500
But as I only have a single garage and room for one car infront of the garage (road parking is out of the questiondue to dangerous nature of road steep blind bend) the time has come for me to relenquish ownership of my beloved white 155 8v
The Fiat dealer is not interested in the car. And the 500 will arrive around the end of March. The MOT on the 155 runs out a week or so before that, but it is taxed until the end of 2008. So I'll be driving it until the day before the MOT runs out and then looking to get rid.
A close friend has offered to buy the car for his father, as due to ill health he struggles with out power steering on the corsa he has now. I kind of sold him my sisterin laws Escort a couple of years ago, which has just been scrapped, wasn't particularly looked after either, but no complaints game back our way.
Yesterday the exhaust started blowing so popped into the local garage which has looked after the car for the last 9 years of my 12 years of ownership.
Fixed the exhaust for 20 quid, some bolts holding the front part of the exhaust to the CAT had rusted off. I had mentioned I didn't want to spend much money as the car was probably going to be scrapped. After the repair the mechanic who had being underneath, started asking me questions about it such as had it had the cam belt done (its an 8v
) he then said when the mot was up he'd take if of my hands too. I explained I'd want a bit for the tax and the new battery I fitted last week and at least the scrape value. Still seemed keen, even though car hasn't been washed for 6 months and currently only has 1 winscreen wiper, and a few warning lights/gauges on/ not working correctly.
Now not sure who should get the car, the good mate or the friendly mechanic.
Both have done me favours in the past both seem quite keen, wouldn't want to upset either. Though I suspect the mechanic would take better care of my baby and the sad demise it would suffer at my mates dads hands would upset me (and be more apparent as I see my mate most days).
Who should I sell it too?
and the second question is how much is a fair price.
Car is 1994 2lt 8v in white with 95,000 2 owner vehicle with full service history. 4 matching vredstiens have done around 7,000 miles. Exhaust is stainless, raditor 7 months old, battery brand new, (until I saw the Fiat I was planning on a few more years use). Had new wishbones at 65000
will have 9months tax
has a little bit of rust showing on rear drivers side wheel arch, one wider (but a selection of second hand spares) will have no mot.
I guess £150 for the tax and battery, how much for Scrap and a bit of good will. Say £250?
what do you think?
This is hard as I may be consigning a good car (may be the best I'll ever own)to its last few months and I still love it to bits. But getting rid of Bertie is NOT an option
