Baffled beyond Baffled!!

Hello and a Merry Christmas to everyone!!
I'm new to the forum and also to Alfas so this is a looooooong one.
I have got what i can only describe as the most baffling problem EVER with my Alfa (2.0ltr T Spark).
When i bought it a couple of months ago it ran fine, a little slow to say the least, but fine. Then it started hunting occassionaly which got worse over a few weeks. Then it started to feel lumpy when driving along at 30/40 mph as though petrol wasn't getting through so i took it to a local garage who plugged it in and said there were no faults being found and said it 'might' be the MAF so i bought a genuine article from Mangoletsi, Knutsford. I also replaced the spark plugs and cleaned out the throttle body housing. It ran much quicker and smoother for about a day and gradually returned back to what it was. Garage number 2 plugged in and said no faults were reported and said they had a reading or printout from something or other that was showing the Lamba sensor to be behaving eratically, so i had a new one fitted and it ran slightly better for about 3 miles and started lumpy -jumpin' again! Although the hunting was less and sometimes not at all. Now four days on, it's running worse than ever and i have to depress the clutch frequently whilst following the usual sunday drivers to stop it from Kangarooing every time my foot returns to the gas. What in gods name is wrong with this car? Is there anyone out there who really knows the answer? Its a mint car and i don't want to part with it but i am on the verge of self harm!!
