Planning on buying a 147.

Hey there, so ive been scoping around on this forum and been reading alot about the 147 as im really interested in it :P
Im planning to check out a 2005 147 2.0 TS
that has been facelifted and it has red skins interior so it looks really fresh x_x
This is going to be my first car and i really like it so far of what ive been reading and seeing about it.
It has driven about 128000 km and at 11000km it got the timing belt, waterpump and termostat changed. Planning to cop this car for about 2500$.. It has been owned by a 60-year old gentlemen for about 7 years and im pretty sure it has been in good care.

What is usually a good check list when looking at this car, and what are some well known problems that i should check for ?

When opening the door it gives a little bit of noise but i guess thats a simple fix.. ? :P

Check for a diesel sound on cold start-up. These engines have a cam variator (adjusts valve timing) which can wear and need changing.

Check for even tyre wear to assess suspension integrity. There may be slightly more wear on the inside of the fronts if the tyres are old, this is fairly normal. Shouldn't be severe though.

Go for a test drive and try to find some speed bumps to check for any knocking/squeaking, especially from the front.

Plus the usual stuff, like smoke out of the exhaust, electric windows all work etc.

Oh, and check the oil level, these engines can use a little oil. It's normal, but the level should always have been topped up. Also, check inside of oil filler cap for any emulsified oil (creamy white layer). This would indicate head gasket issues or other nastiness you can do without.

Similarly, check engine coolant for any signs of oil, and that it looks generally pretty clean.

When exactly was the timing belt changed? Not just mileage but the year? If it was more than 3 years ago it will be due for a change so use that in your bargaining.

If you hear any creaks that should like its coming from the dashboard its usually the upper wishbones. Also check for an oil leak where the gearbox mounts to the engine as this is a common area for a leak and isn't anything to worry about but you might be able to get a couple hundred off. If there seems to be oil residue over the front of the engine and manifold then the cam cover gasket is likely to be leaking. Again this is quite common and nothing to be alarmed about so long as it isn't leaking too majorly and you will get the gasket replaced when you next change the timing belt. If the clutch pedal feels heavy or makes a creaking sound when you depress it that is indicative of a failing thrust bearing and this is a big one to keep an eye on as a clutch change would almost be the value of your car.

Check the warning lights to make sure the airbag warning light come ON when you start the ignition but then turns off after about 3 seconds. Otherwise you might have to go through the fun of trying to sort the airbag wiring which can be a pain in the backside. Other than that just general things like how it drives, does it feel like all the power is there etc.

Best of luck!
