For a cheap stop gap car, you can't beat a 2.0 164 TS. They're a good strong car with a bulletproof engine and they're worth nothing now - £400 for a tidy one and they're a better car than the 156 ever was. An 8v 155 isn't a bad banger either.
At 118'000, a 2.0 156 is at the mileage where it really could chuck a rod through the block or some other mechanical malady. Even for 1000 quid I'd avoid it.
