in the past i've used this trick and it makes a huge difference. a remap looks pointless in comparison. acceleration improvements can be huge, depending on the change in ratios obviously.
i'm trying to find a 1.6 gearbox to stick on my 156 but i cant find one for a reasonable price (£100 max). £300 is beyond a joke imo, thats 4 times the average scrapyard price for a gearbox.
my research suggests the 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 gearboxes are all interchangable. i suggest you do the maths to determine what rpm you'll be at compared to speed in 5th gear, for example if you hit 5500rpm at 70mph it isnt very practicle unless 90% of your driving is racing round town centres. i'd aim for 5000-5500rpm at 90mph (my usual cruising speed)
