Sorry been in Sweden with no data connection. The plugs are new but are the cheaper Bosch ones. I'll pull them out and take a look.
It seems that if I leave it for a couple of days, then start it, it sounds much worse. Once it is hot, the knocking noise goes, but have a rattle that sounds like a tappet, but only at about 2k rpm. Above or below that you can't hear that rattle. But when I started it after coming back from Sweden, it sounded terrible. It's just a heavy knock sound that sounds like it's at crankshaft speed. I've taken the timing covers off. I put new belts and all of the tensioners/pulleys on in January. I didn't change the water pump though as it sounded and felt fine. I haven't slackened the tension on the cam belt, but can feel a tiny bit of movement in the tensioner, but that could be just free play before the spring moves. Equally, the balance belt tensioner moves on its spring when you push on the belt but doesn't seem as smooth as I think its meant to. The cam pulleys are tight and so is everything else. I was hoping something was obviously loose! I remember that when I started it after changing the belts, it sound rattly, but it quieted down after a while. I put it down to the act of turning the engine over by hand so many times with no oil pressure so emptying the tappets. The engine felt tight as well for a week which I put down to the belts bedding in. Could I have done something wrong in putting the belts on? I read loads of guides and stuff first and bought the camshaft locking tools and a tdc gauge and was happy I got it all timed properly.
I tried using a screwdriver to my ear to isolate the noise but I didn't seem to be getting any clues tbh. I'll have another go tomorrow if my dad is about as I need someone to rev it up and someone to get underneath. It sounds a lot like an old triumph I had sounded before a big end bearing picked up and it. If anyone can recall the sound of an old Sierra which had their characteristic camshaft knocking sound after 100k miles, it sounds like that. I have checked I bolted the camshaft bearing caps back down after I did the timing belt as well. I had hoped it was the variator but after hearing it in the car park yesterday, I'm pretty sure it's not that, as it's a proper knocking. I am still still hoping its the dmf with a bit of luck.
