So I finally got round to taking the GT to a couple of body shops to get a quote to sort out the obligatory crushed sills. The first place said they wouldn't touch it because of the rust!?! and the second said they were rotten and would fail the MOT... Minimum £500 repair! Does that price sound about right?

As you can see in the pictures below, the damage is extensive. Knowing nothing about bodywork (or much in general) how would these be repaired? And does anyone know if I have any alternative options?

I've just shelled out £800 on front suspension and bearings so any cost saving would be great... no wait... absolutely vital.

My 03 147 just failed MOT for the same problem. Was Quoted at least £400 (for both) but would have to find replacements as they wouldn't weld such badly corroded sills!

So, sounds about same as I was quoted anyway.

Sorned mine and will soon list it on ebay as mot failure.

If anyone is interested, it would be worth repairing if you want a project. Black, red leather, 1.6 lusso <98,000, recent new tyres.. open to offers!

i see the pics ok.

but as for the repairs ,things like this are a pain and can cost a fair amount.
and for this very reason is why i taught myself to weld. i got a cheap welder and welded everything i could.
it didnt take long and messy welds can be grinded tidy , worth while doing and comes in handy.

every alfa owner should learn to weld or own a dust pan and brush :biglaugh::jester:

anyway i would try find a cheaper quote , main garages do charge alot and i bet smaller garages some can weld better as they prob have customers with cheaper older cars and can weld with their feet

All four jacking points needed doing on mine as it too failed the mot because of them.

You want them rolled properly after they've been welded. A local Alfa specialist did mine mine and ****ed them up! I had to take it back for them to put right as they thought that handing me the car back with full of primer with dodgy filler to boot was acceptable. They agreed to put the filling right and repaint after I got a local body shop to look at it and give me their opinion.

It now looks fine from the top but if you take a look underneath the sill is still not straight as they didn't 'roll' it as the body shop said they should have done!

Cost was around £280 the paint was free as I was fuming...the body shop I got to look over the job quoted £250-£300 for all 4 jacking points to be welded, rolled and painted if that helps.

Yours do look a bit worse than mine did mind..

while there at it get them to under seal your car as well. My other local specialist in Wolverhampton will do it for £60 all in using wax oil, including cleaning it up beforehand.

this is why so many of them end up at the scrappies...

if it were me I would evaluating and calculating what the car is going to cost me in the next year..thing is if its due a number of the GT ''regular Items'' such as suspension bushes and oil cooler ,turbo hoses, EGR clean and or delete, clutch, flywheel, brake cables, any number of service items It may be time to move on.

what state are the tyres in, how long on the MOT, given the state of the sills I would be having a careful look at the underside condition as it's looks as though it's never seen a can of underseal in its life.

what I am saying is take it all into account and consider whether replacing with a newer GT with all of this done might be a less costly and all together better long term solution before putting in more money, which may well oblige you to do the next thing, and then the next thing, and so on...

you get my point I'm sure

best of luck what ever you decide:thumbup:
