OBD2 commumications Alfa156

Hi all,

of course it takes something to not work in order to introduce myself.

Anyway, my story is: I have a 2001 Alfa 156 1.6 - Lovely machine and really enjoy driving it. So, the dreaded Engine Management Light has come on and I'd like to read back from the ECU to see what's the story. I have tried 5 or 6 software packages with no Joy.

The OBD connector has Pins 1,3,4,5,7,8,9,11 & 16 populated so, am I correct in assuming its a ISO9141 interface with No L-line? 4&5 are Gnds and 16 is Vbat. Can anyone tell me what the others do and if my assumptions are correct? I have decided to ask the experts as someone might be able to guide me in the right direction.

Also I am using Jeff Noxon's opto isolator interface from RS232 to the OBD2.

Anyway, hope someone can tell if I am following the right path or going in the wrong direction

Happy Christmas to one and all

Do you know what ECU is fitted?

One of the members wrote his own code to read the ECU some time ago. I'm sure it was for the bosch motronic M1.5.5. It certainly worked on my 99 156. I'm pretty sure the initialisation code for waking up the ECU was different from EOBD units. I do know he was planning on selling the software at a small cost to cover his delevopment.

If your interested send me a pm and I'll get some more details off him.

Re: OBD2 commumications Alfa156

in 2001 all petrol vehicles had to use standard eobd protocols. on your car it will be 9141-2 or 14230 KWP2000.

a quick look at the schematics suggests the Jeff Noxon interface is the same as the elm323, so it will work with 9141-2 protocol. for that reason i believe your problem is simply the software you are using.
