Motor Control System Failure 1.9 JTD 2006

Quick question - car stalled when waiting in heavy traffic and when eventually restated got the 'Motor Control System Failure'.I had a look at lots of threads and have ordered a crank shaft sensor.

Quick question - it drives fine but the same issue happened in the same place today - I need it for work, should I be driving it - am I doing it any damage or should I AA it home 33 miles

Thanks BB

If it is the crank position sensor the worst that is going to happen is that the car will stop running. Obviously that would be bad if it packs up whilst overtaking or crossing a level crossing, but a faulty sensor won't cause any mechanical harm.

A failing crank sensor usually starts giving problens with restarting when the engine is hot not stalling when already running, did you get the fault codes read.

One Fault
P0335 - Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit

The hot starting thing makes sense. The car runs fine but when I get stuck in a static queue after a few minutes as the temp goes up the car stalls. It won't immediately restart but a few minutes of patient waiting and it does.

I had exactly the same problem on my 156 2.4JTD (and on my SAAB 9000), replaced the crankcase sensor and it cured the problem in both cases.

In the early stages of crank sensor failure it will only cut out at low revs....first time it happened to me I drove back from Shropshire to Burnley without it cutting out by a touch of "heel-and-toe-ing" to keep the revs above about 2000 at all times......

But to answer your other question - no you won't do it any harm by running it.
