Another Week Another Large Bill !!!
Ok so the Alfa left me and my daughter high & dry on the M6 this evening and cost me a small fortune at the sme time. I'll explain and maybe you could offer your opinions.
Driving from Sterling in Scotland to Lancaster services to collect my daughter when without warning I lose all power, the Alfa just dies for a second or two then comes back to life, I then get the engine management light and about 30 seconds later it dies again. I back off the power and once again she comes back to life. I take it really easy and manage to make it to Lancaster services with the mamagemant lights still on but running very rough. I switch off and go to get something to eat. Half hour later and it wont even start, then starts and dies within a couple of seconds. I eventually get it going but it's missfiring generally running like crap.
Anyway I set off and again once it's over 3000 revs it seems to be ok but just as luck would have it I run into a traffic jam as some divy has broken down in the fast lane and the traffic is at a standstill. Within 2 minutes of coming to a halt she stalls and wont start. I pust her to the hard shoulder and run the battery flat trying to start her. By rthis time it's getting dark and my 3yo daughter is getting stressed. I'm over 100 miles from home and I don't belong to any breakdown agencies, I know I know, i was looking for the best deal last week but never got round to joining.
To cut a long story short I went with the AA for £179 and they had someone out to me within 30 minutes. After a look round the engine bay he tried starting her but to no avail. He then disconnected the MAF and tried again and it started first time, idled smoothly and reved nicely. Now I didn't even know it would run at all without the MAF connected or I might have tried unplugging it myself. So he got me on my way and the car ran like a dream all the way home all be it with the engine management lights on.
Here's the thing........ In September it went in for a major 72,000k overhaul. Belts, tensioners, radiator, thermostat, tyres, full service, and a new MAF which cost £240. All the work was done at a garage that came highly reccomended by many people on this forum.
Could someone please tell me that A brand new MAF at that price should last longer than 3 months and that when I go to the garage tomorrow I should be able to have it replaced free of charge.
Sorry for the essay but your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Owning an Alfa is not a matter of life or death...... It's much more important than that.
