Screeching seemingly from around a wheel

My car is a 2005 Alfa 156 1.9JTD saloon.
From cold everything is quiet then after a couple of miles I get a screeching sound, if I brake it stops for a short while then starts up again. If I stop the it stops and when I start going again it's quiet for a couple of miles then starts up again.
It's difficult to pin down exactly where it's coming from as I have to lean out of the window and it doesn't happen when the car is stationery.
I thought at first that it might be a wheel bearing but after looking through the threads on here that would seem to be a rumbling/grinding sound.
Anybody got any ideas?

Probably brake pad squeal. Caused by pads starting to stick in the calliper. Strip, clean, lubricate with copper grease and reassemble.

Possibly could be brake pad wear indicator malfunction and pads are metal to metal.

Feel the wheels after a long drive. A hotter wheel indicates a sticky caliper. If you don't wash your car much you might notice more brake dust on the sticky wheel aswell
