Why does it stall/refuse to start???? 156man
I have a problem, my car decides every so often to just stop running.
1999 156 2.0 T Spark Manual 93000kms,
First time it happened was when I went to start it. I had driven the car about 25-30mins parked it left it for 10 mins or so returned to drive off and it just wouldnít start. It turns over so its not (just) battery but it just doesnít seem to catch, ie it makes the sounds it always does for the first second or so when you start the engine but it just never comes to life. I was actually on my way to a mateís workshop to change my oil at the time so when I got there they checked the error codes but found nothing. Since then that has happened about 3 times. This was very annoying but it only happened roughly one in ten starts. To get it going again I would just leave it for about 15 minutes or more and it would start like a new car and I would drive away, this worked say 60% of the time sometimes I would have to wait longer.
Then one day I am driving along for about 10 mins, stopped at lights, engine just idling and it stalled revs drop to zero. I turned the key again and it came to life and off I drove. A few minutes later it did it again but when I went to start it it would not start and it made the same sound etc as when doing a cold start like what I mentioned above. Since that time it has done this about 2-3 times when I could start it again instantly and about 5 times when I could not. The times when it does this are getting a fair bit more frequent so I canít really drive it (ruined my date on Saturday night, Grrrrrr)
Otherwise the car is fine I have had no issues with it nor work done. I had a mechanic look it over just after the first time everything he checked seemed in order but he didnít do a massive check.
I am thinking maybe petrol maybe immobiliser maybe battery maybe karma but really I am not sure, so I was wonder has anyone encountered or heard about anything like this or have any idea about what it could be that is causing this?
This really is very annoying because I am actually selling the car and this issue first raised its head about a day or two after I put the car on sale.
I could sell it as is if on the test drive it doesnít stall but regardless it will happen shortly thereafter and who ever buys it will be rather unimpressed and will want their money back.
Any tips, advice, related stories, semi educated guesses, things to look out for etc would be gratefully received as I really am quite stuck on this. If you are not very sure about your advice please mention that and post it anyway. I am currently looking through the forum for similar problems but havenít found anything similar so if you know a similar thread pointing that out it would be great.
Lastly I have been offered about 3-4000 AUD (Roughly 12-1500 Pounds) less than what I want for it from a dealership so if it costs near or more than that to fix I will just sell it as is to a dealer.
Any assistance you can provide would be great.
(If anyone knows a good Alfa man or woman in Sydney Australia that would also be very helpful)
