does it make much of a difference if you use semi-synthetic or synthetic oil?

Re: synthetic oil?

Oh no..not another oil question.

Some Say,,Crisp and Dry is the way to go.
Some Say,, What does it say in the Handbook
Some Say,, use this interweb thingy and look up just about any oil manufacturers site (EXCEPT Crisp and Dry..obviously) and see what they recommend for your car.

They will give an option of semi-synthetic or fully synthetic. From there on its how much you want to spend.

Does it make any Difference???

Some say...Yes
Some say...Maybe
Some say...No

Either way, as long as you change the oil and filter at the recommended intervals I'd venture to suggest your Alfa engine will come to no oil related harm. For what its worth I use a semi synthetic in my 2.4JTD and Kia Sorento 2.5CRDi.....and (wait for it) Crisp and Dry in the wife's Skoda

Re: synthetic oil?

If they're the same spec, then no. If you're changing less often than every 6k miles or 6 months then you should use synthetic as it degrades less quickly.

I don't know whether it applies to hard driving as well or not.

Re: synthetic oil?

I phoned my dealer in Knowle(Guests) and they told me any good quality semi-synthetic, I asked about Selina oil and he put me off telling me it's about 10 a litre.

Re: synthetic oil?

The main thing is to use something of the right viscosity and to check the level.
These days it will be hard to find any oil that doesn't meet the minimum specs required.
However if you use an oil that is far too thin you can easily have problems.

Remember: Full Synthetic doesn't automatically mean thin oil. It is just than many makes specify 0W30 oils now, so that is what gets stocked in the shops. Always use the right viscosity oil.

Re: synthetic oil?

I changed to fully synthetic (Millers XFD 5w40) because I was doing short journeys; I found there was much less drag and engine response was much better as was fuel consumption. Before I changed oil the car would almost come to a half at low speeds when I took my foot off the throttle, with fully synthetic it just kept going. That proved its worth to me.
