156 Knock, Clunk & Squeak!
Well after the situation with the ARB droplinks the other day, try and work this one out...
The 156 V6 is a great car, but I think someone has put the kiss of death on this particular one...
I have had a constant knocking sound (heavy knock) coming from the front drivers side ever since I have owned this car (brought it in June this year)...
"LOWER WISHBONES" I hear everyone say? - yes, changed both sides, and the problem is still there. Could be the DROPLINKS? Changed them, yes the problem is still there. OK, maybe it's the UPPER WISHBONES? Changed them, yes the problem is still there. ANTI-ROLL BAR? Bushes still exist in there and actually look quite new. Something on the FRONT BRAKES? Nope, changed discs, pads - all put back together nice and tight, problem still there. SUSPENSION TOP MOUNTS? They are as they should be. ENGINE MOUNTS? Ah, now they all look very solid, although the only one that does look quite "slack" is the strange one that is bolted around the drivers-side strut. I tested this by levering a bar up and down under the bush, and there is quite a bit of movement, so it could be that, but the knock is coming from lower down (I think) - it's so heavy that it knocks through the steering and the floorpan, and makes me cringe everytime I hit so much as a small defect in the road!
What about the "creak" that's coming from the front passenger side? This is the one that really ****es me off, as this is why I changed the upper wishbones. Everytime I run over a speed hump, come off my drive, or pretty much everytime the suspension components are compressed, an annoying "creak" is heard from what appears to be directly below the bottom-left corner of the windscreen, or at the back of the glovebox - as far as I am aware, this is a common symptomn of a knackered upper wishbone, sure enough I changed it and found it was quite worn in the rubber bush. Although the problem is still there!
Anyone that can help me out with this can have their name written on my log book as the new owner! Or if nobody can, I will simply fill in the red section and have it scrapped! Only joking, sorry it's been so long-winded, but I have explained the symptoms as best I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
