Selespeed / Actuator Advice please

Hi Guys,

I have a selespeed problem in 1st gear when hot. Engine revs but doesn't engage. Eventually it does engage on & off - once I'm out of first gear it's fine.
Pretty dangerous driving up slopes and carparks and have had a few amusing moments :P

Clutch rod length adjustments and computer recalibration etc. has had no lasting solution to the problem.

After speaking to a few alfa mechanics they came up with the following:

1) Replace the whole actuator unit at a cost of ~$4K (the car is probably worth $5K)
2) Replace a specific component of the actuator unit at a cost of ~$1K (mechanic would not specify which particular part)
3) Replace the clutch plunger solenoid valve (?) for $600

Any advice/consensus on what people think the issue might be and which part really needs replacing and therefore which option I should try?

Thanks in advance for your help!
