the best place to put one is right where the stock intercooler is, so IMO this mod is only worth it with others such as an FMIC along with a re-map and maybe a turbo upgrade, if you are just going to plant it in the engine bay I don't see the point from a performance point of view unless you box/and or cold feed it...you would change the induction noise but i will leave it to others to say whether this is desirable or not ..for me, er no..
the only issue with that position for a cone filter is standing water ,with that in mind i would probably make it a seasonal thing and maybe run the standard set up with a performance panel filter in the winter months...I recently looked at this and experimented for a while changing between an FMIC and stock intecooler and found i could change from one set up to the other in about an hour once a had it all sorted. for testing purposes I left the FMIC mounted with the end caps on to stop crap getting in so it was a simple case of pipework and stock cooler off.
I found out what I wanted too and now run the stock cooler with stainless steel turbo pipes and the stock airbox with a K&n filter, but at any time an FMIC upgrade is an hours work as I have already modified the stock airbox to accommodate the FMIC piping.
hope this gives you another potential option.
