Not Happy TS rough running update -ignition help needed

Hi all, thanks for all of the responses to my last thread regarding my poorly 2.0L TS. After spending 350 having the fault NOT identified, I have had to take it off the road and go back to driving a Passat. On the basis I now don't trust even the supposedly more competent specialists to diagnose the fault I am going to try the elimination method. As the running has got worse, appearing as loud/raspy exhaust note, vibration through the rev range (even when stationary) and all worse under pressure, ie hill climbing, hard acceleration, I am beginning to think ignition related. Nothing showed up on Examiner, but is there any way of testing the coil packs (apart from replacement), are there any other parts of the ignition circuit that are known to fail apart from coil packs (and obviously plugs), what else should I look for. Any experience or comment welcome on this. If I find it's not the coil packs or plugs what next??????????

Re: TS rough running update -ignition help needed

if its loud but no hole or leaks in exhaust, has it had a decat cos i think they do get loud if the cats been removed. As for checking coilpacks, if you do a search you should find the info you need to check them with a multimeter. Remove the coilpack and give them a real good look over, some of the leads are very short and damage easily, look for signs of arcing. Also where the coilpacks attach to the plugs get in a right mess and might need a good clean. I got a complete set of coilpacks including leads for £250 from shop4parts a lot lot cheaper than Alfa
