Intermittent throttle issue - P0220 P1220 P1221
For the past few months I'd suffering an intermittent throttle problem where the power dies (to idle revs) and prodding the accelerator has no effect. At this stage its totally recking my head and I get nightmares of "*beep* *beep* *beep* MCS Error" :-) Sometimes the power dies briefly but then returns in 'safe mode' (I.e. enough power to drive home but pretty awful otherwise). Or else it cuts out for a few minutes at a time and just returns with no obvious reason.
At the very beginning, doing lots of research online, it sounded like a dodgy throttle potentiometer (TPS). A friend of mine had two of these spare so I swaped one over. However no luck.
Then brought it to my independent Alfa mechanic who initially diagnosed it as faulty accelerator potentiometer so this was changed (twice! - first time mechanic thought new one was faulty).
However the problem soon returned. After that we cut off the plug going to the pedal and soldered the wires directly to it. (Professional Job by friend of mine who preps rally cars for living).
Everything was grand for a few weeks but its come back to haunt me. I can only assume its the throttle body connector at this point? Or mabe the cable going from accelerator to ecu is dodgy.
Reading the codes using an obd2 scanner gives:
P0220 - generic code indicating either Throttle or Accelerator potentiomer
P1220 - ???
Does anyone here have a list of the Alfa (or Fiat) specific obd2/dtc codes for P1220 and P1221?
These reappear every time the fault is triggered.
Unfortunately the problem can just disappear for weeks at a time or, as it is currently, occur every day.
