Re: HELP!! Q System Transmission Gearbox Fault
hi fahim, sorry to hear about ur predicament.
the gearbox error light comes on for several reasons, some of which may not be related to the gearbox per se. for example, a failed MAF will also trigger the gearbox light and put the gearbox in "safe mode" (4th gear only).
a failed solenoid valve will also trigger the light at put it in safe mode. are u experiencing safe mode or are u getting all the gears? if you have all gears the problem may not be serious.
a failed ATF cooler fan can also trigger the light. the fan doesn't come on until the gearbox is hot. a good hard drive with some gear stirring should get it to kick in. if it doesnt that might be your problem. if wiring it direct to the batt (bypassing the relays) doesnt get it to come on, your fan might be dead.
the best way to find out what's really wrong with your car is to put it into the examinder diagnostic computer. alfa, fiat and lancia share the same diagnostics, so if you have either dealership in your country you should be able to get them to help you pull the error code and see exactly what's wrong with the car.
if you cant get access to an examiner, i'd test the ATF cooler fan first and work from there. that said, mine's got 170k kms on the clock and i've never had to replace the ATF cooler fan.
dont worry too much about the ATF. the q-system is an aisin (japanese gearbox) and tough as nails. so long as you're using a DEXRON III fluid you should be fine. god knows ive never used the recommended Tutela in my life. i've always used Motul ATF-1A which is a synthetic DEXIII fluid. works for me. just change the ATF every year or 20k and your gearbox should be fine.
and yes, the aisins are used on a fair bit of japanese cars so worse case scenario you could try them.
