Weird noise competition.....
Take one 2.4JTD 140 (no mods) year 2000 with around 90,000 on the clock.
All running fine except for slightly squeaky suspension.
Just changed jobs so journey has changed from smooth M4 to proper cross country.
Took car into garage to get suspension squeak sorted - nothing they could really do except squirt some silicone grease in - seems to have helped though (Sorry for the preamble, but It could be important).
A couple of days after the visit to the garage I now get a thump thump thump noise under the bonnet. Seems to be coming from the other side of the drivers footwell. It only happens (it seems) when driving straight and not accelerating or braking. The noise sounds like something tied to the drive shaft that is then hitting the bulkhead ( I originally thought it could have been a bit of left over pheasant I had hit a couple of days earlier). The noise happens with the car out of gear, so that rules out the engine itself (IMO), on a smooth road, so not the suspension. If the noise starts I can stop it by either braking or accelerating or turning the steering wheel.
The noise only seems to start when driving at a constant speed (or slightly slowing down - but not braking) anywhere between 5 and 70mph.
When pulling away from a junction you will normally get one thump as if some slack is being taken up somewhere.
I took the car back into the garage and they had a good look at it and there was nothing visible from the top of the bottom of the engine that was loose or rubbing (no undertray makes this a bit easier to check). They even drove round their carpark with a guy sat on the engine. They confirmed it was definately drivers side and the guy could feel it through the suspension strut.
One of the engine mounts is slightly worn, but wasn't causing the problem.
They also welded back on one of the exhaust brackets that had come off.
If it wasn't for the noise you wouldn't know anything was wrong as the car drives and feels normal.
The only good news was they charged me nothing for well over an hour's work for 2 of them and in my book, that's got to be worth a plug - Plaister Autos, Swindon.
Any thoughts welcome - I'm off to finish my coffee which has now gone cold
