?clutch judder?

I'd be very grateful for some advice on a new problem with my 156 jtd diesel (2003).
When I engage the clutch in any gear there is a lot of juddering - worse in low gears but noticeable even in higher gears and reverse. Once the clutch is engaged its fine and the car runs well.
I cannot get the clutch to slip when going uphill in a high gear.
The dealer has quoted 900 to change the clutch, but is there any other alternative diagnosis or treatment?
many thanks for any thoughts

Re: ?clutch judder?

Is that not a symptom of a worn flywheel??

Get the garage to monitor the clutch speed, could be clutch revolving with gear box trying to engage, dodgy sensor

Re: ?clutch judder?

I threw my car into 5th whilst driving up a hill at about 25 mph the other day. Saw the revs rise as the car began to slow down I need the new clutch soon.

Re: ?clutch judder?

Have these cars got a dual mass flywheel? If this breaks up it could cause judder. I know they are expensive also...
