My 1999 156 2.0 TS also has a noticeable flat spot around 2500 rpm which is easy to drive around. Compared to my heavily modified 2.0 MGB GT the Alfa is simplicity itself.
Selecting the right gear to provide torque when pressing on is an art I am still learning, but I find that for normal daily driving there is adequate torque across the rev range to keep up with the general traffic flow.
Off cam economy isn't bad - I have seen 41 mpg. However, I can despatch a tankful of standard unleaded in a shade under 300 miles if the mood takes me.
I would love to see what the TS engine was like in a Caterham, I wonder if anyone has built one?
