Stevie Wonder bulb replacement
I realised I that the right fog was out on my GT, and I wanted to get it replaced as we've had a number of mornings with quite heavy fog.
Anyway, I'm out there in the dark last night with the head torch on, luckily not easily seen from the road, trying to replace the bulb.
I get the cover twisted off easy enough, and the spring retainer clip seems to release easily enough as well. I'm starting to think that I'll have this job done in about 5 minutes flat. I gingerly place the new bulb in, taking care not to touch the glass, fumble around blindly trying to lift up the clip and get it into place. What seems like ages later, the bloody clip won't go back on. I can't see anything. I contemplated removing trim but there is a bit of bodywork that would still obstruct the view.
If I could see what was happening it would be a doddle. But even feeling around trying to build up a picture of what is going wrong, I can't figure out why it's failing to clip back in as it is designed to do. It should be a simple job, and I've done this plenty of times on other cars with no issue.
After a while it's getting cold, I'm getting angry, partly because it should be a easy task, but god dammit the ****er just won't go back, so I pack it in. I leave no bulb in, place the cover, and go back inside.
It shouldn't be that difficult.
Normally the clip should engage with flanges by pushing up with a sideways motion. No dice. My guess is the clip was deformed already, and by releasing it, I've let it go back to it's bent shape which now refuses to go into place as it should.
If I could only SEE THE BUGGER!!!!
I will have a second crack at it tonight. I've googled all over the place, but there are no good photos of how the clip goes into place. The workshop manual gives me a dinky little monochrome drawing and the explanation that goes something like "clip in replacement bulb with retaining spring"
Meanwhile there is a guy here who is doing open heart surgery on his gearbox and making it look like child's play. People like him make me feel somehow challenged. I tell you I'm usually good at these things!
