Valve Kit

I have an alfa 147 2002 model and the valve kit needs replacing due to the timing belt snapping, does anyone know how much I'm looking at and the best to way to go about fixing it.

Re: Valve Kit

Oh no not another one.

Unfortunately this can be a real problem as I have found out from my own experience. You can repair the head with the engine in situ fairly inexpensively as head rebuilds go.

The problem however is the damage is usually far worse than just the head. Unless you are very, very lucky you will probably find the main bearings (big ends) will fail within 6k of the rebuild. This will be an expensive full rebuild. The damage seems to be done by the force of the piston hitting the valves. If you inend to keep the vehicle it may be worth getting a replacement engine or having yours fully rebuilt.

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news. I hope you get it sorted soon.

Re: Valve Kit

In terms of price you're probably looking for about £1200 for an engine rebuild froma specialist (not a main dealer)

Re: Valve Kit

That's bad luck Diana.

£1300 for a topend rebuild by an Alfa specialist but get them to drop the sump and check the bottom end for any visible damage. Might even be worth replacing the big end shells even if no damage is seen, while they are down there.

Re: Valve Kit

Hmm, looks like a very expensive process.

Thanks for all your help.

Re: Valve Kit

as roberto,

replace shells regardless, or else face a bigger bill within 1000miles.
