Alfa 156 2.4 jtd power steering pump change advice
Hello, I'm looking to replace my power steering pump next weekend and am looking for some advice on the removal procedure.
This is the third pump that has failed within a month, the previous two has been replaced by two different garages. Now I have to do it on my own as my budget has run out.
Hopefully figuring out why pumps keep failing in process. My guess/hope is that mechanics didn't flush the system properly which is causing new (used) pumps to fail.
The car is Alfa 156 2.4JTD, 150 Bhp, 03.2002 model
Any help, advice or suggestions are appreciated.
(A bit of the history: Early December garage done some suspension work (bushes and arms) and new brake pads for an MOT, when driving out the steering juddered and than gave up after about 5 minutes of driving. Stopped, rang garage to book me in and drove home, power steering didn work until above 1500rpm. Garage changed the pump , said they done a test drive and handed me the car back, steering was very strange, too light at time and a bit havier a second later, i stopped to investigate, revved the engine and steering wheel spun on it's own. Drove back to the garage ( 10 minutes after I left) Was told it a pump again, the new (used) one might have been faulty.
After that I decided to go to different garage where another reconditioned pump has been installed and system flushed with reservoir still attached. Great, the steering felt a bit havier than usual but at least I had like 80% effective power steering. Until Yesterday! When parking the car I had a bit higher revs while turning the wheel, say like 2500rpm when this nasty noise occurfed like metal to metal grinding noise. No power steering at all, just some 15% when i revved it to some 3500rpm. This morning back to usual no power steering at idle but it picks up as low as 1200 rpm.)
