yeah mate, you get PTC and NTC thermistors, basically one gets higher in resistance as the temp climbs (PTC) and one gets lower as the temperature climbs (NTC)
It might be marked what it is, but will likely have a range between -10 and +40 so should read very different after cooling in the fridge, then dip it in warm water and you should see a smooth or stepped increase or decrease from one to the other with the meter on the ohms range, might need to fiddle with what scale you use but would expect it to go from a few tens of ohms to 2k or 3k at the other end.
A dud would probably be open circuited, as its hard for a film resistor to short out, though not impossible. Carbon versions cant short at all but can crack in the middle, causing an open circuit device.
