Hmmm 156 JTD starter motor question

Hi all
I replaced my crankshaft sensor this afternoon. and while I was there I noticed that a bracket that was supporting some electrical looms was not connected to anything. I went to try and refit it and it looked like it belongs on the top attachment bolts for the starter motor, so I slackened them off and fitted the bracket and tightened them back up. I went to start the car and nothing but a click, Then I slackened off the bolts again removed the bracket re-tightened them again went to start and again nothing. The only wat to get the starter motor to start the car is if the top bolts are slack. This cannot be right..... is there some kind of spacer that goes between the starter motor and the engine body to give the turning gear a bit of clearance? Because I dont fancy driving round with half undone bolts.
