Alfa 156 Selespeed fault. Code 1741 engagement sensor
I have this Alfa 156 2000cc x reg with a selespeed fault. It has been an ongoing problem for a few weeks now. It all started when it would not change gear from fisrt to second, it went staright into neutral. Over a few days it lost reverse.
I am a repairing garage, so i set about looking for fault. was told the selectors were common to break in the gaerbox. So we removed it and sent to a reconditioners who we have used for years. They replaced some worn pins but found no obviuos fault. We fitted a new clutch and refitted gearbox.
We have a good diagnostic tool and we could see the hydraulic pressure was good so ruled out, pump. We then sent the actuator mechanism away to a specialist who overhalued it, still no joy. We now have a situation where we have a fault code stored of 1741, engagement senor, o.c or s.c to batt+v. The engine will not start. We assume that the ecu is not recognising that it is in neutral, and therefore will not allow it to turn over. We know it is definately in neutral.
We are not sure which of the sensors on the actuator is the engagement sensor, so any help much appreciated.
