I feel your pain. Check for damage to the wiring from the hub up in to the wheel arch - it's vulnerable and subject to high vibration, dirt, water etc. This is by far the most common fault on ABS. Sensors can also give bad readings if the toothed rings they pick up on are full of crud so your next check would be to clean these up.
I think you are allowed to drive a car without MOT to a garage for repair provided you have a pre-booked appointment and it's not a silly distance.
