156 V6 dying at 4500rpm
Hi guys. Looked at a 156 V6 today, the car was pretty mint but when I took it for a drive and pushed it a bit the revs died at 4500 as if it hit a rev limiter, they went up slowly to 5000 but barely made it. Pulled it over back at the guy's house and floored it in neutral and again it wouldn't make it above 4500, with some horrible rattling noise that sounded like it could have been a top-end problem or even a blockage in the fuel line or something - sounded a bit like a garden hose spluttering when you put a kink in it and it splutters a bit.
Needless to say I didn't buy the car with this issue, and I think the seller genuinely wasn't aware of it as when he drove me round the block in it he didn't go over 3000rpm, I don't reckon he'd ever got to 4500 to know about the problem.
Just out of curiosity though and for peace of mind I'd like to have an idea of what the problem could have been. My mate and I thought it could have been anything out of top end failure, valve timing, injectors, fuel pump, fuel line, or MAF...
