Re: Dry sound from gearbox
sounds like damaged synchromesh in the gearbox, if you have difficulty selecting only 1 gear it is always the synchromesh, it can lead to stiff gear change and/or a grinding sound. 2nd gear is by far the most common gear to suffer snychromesh problems. usually this problem will be worse when changing at higher rpm (i.e. when you take it up to 7000rpm and change quickly it will be worse than during a gentle 200rpm change)
on my car i get a crunch if i change quickly at higher rpm, but only in second and it enver stops me selcting the gear, and it very rarely happens at lower rpm, so i'm not too concenred. i'll change the gearbox next year when i do the clutch. a gearbox is only £100 from a scrapyard so its no big deal.
you can improve the situaiton a bit by adding molylube and slick50 to the gearbox, i've done this and it makes selecting 2nd easier when it crunches.
