when buying an engine you should do a compression test on it before buying, a compression test will tell you a lot about the health on the engine, how clean it looks is meaningless. if you can hear it running thats also a bonus, but often not possible if the engine is already removed, whereas a compression test only needs a battery on the starter motor so you can still do that with the engine removed.
most breakers and scrapyards will give you a 28day warranty even on an engine.
