Wayward handling

Hi I recently bought a blue 156 1.8 tspark for in fairness very small money ,so while the body and interior is excellent and has good teledial alloys the mechanicals are in need of tlc, for the price I just jumped in and was thankful it would drive me home , I parked it up with new coolent , variator sounds bad , timing belt knocking a bit somewhere and maf and lambda seem shagged no power initially , but main question is what on suspension would cause it to wander sideways on the road and I accelerate or overtake , I have so much to spend I don't want to replace whole suspension to fix potentially one problem ???it also failed the sideslip test , and help appreciated

Could be as cheap and simple as getting the alignment checked and corrected... Wonky wheel angles can certainly make things feel squiffy and wayward... Similarly uneven tread wear can result in bad steering feel etc..

But... If it was a proper grotty cheap purchase, then I'd have every expectation that all the bushes are shot and the balljoints are snotty and falling apart!

I'd probably start by getting it on a proper 4-wheel laser alignment rig (Hunter system or similar), and getting the geometry looked at.. They'll usually be able to have a poke about at the components and advise which ones are goosed also!

Are you going to doing the work yourself, or taking it in to a garage?

Worn stub axle bushes make them wander a bit.

Thanks for the answers (proper grotty cheap purchase ) sums it up but it's actually a good car with a lot of receipts and this is the one I keep and will do the work myself , will eventually change the lot underneath but will start at engine end before I get carried away
