147 GTA

Coolant query

I have put a deposit down on a 147 gta with only one reservation about the car. The coolant in the expansion tank was dark brown in appearance. Checked the rad and all looked ok, so am wondering if this colour is due to neglect and simply needs fresh cooland or an indication of engine damage/corrosion. May seem like a daft question but am looking for peace of mind before picking up the motor

Re: Coolant query

I know nothing about GTAs but dark brown coolant mix would make me think that somebody has dropped a bottle of Radweld in.

There used to be red anti-freeze available but I haven't really noticed it in a car recently.

If the coolant itself is brown and "milky" I'd be careful, as that could mean that it's filled with oxide particles and a large part of the water system is badly rusted. If it's just the bottle that's a bit brown, it's not too abnormal - could just mean the car has been filled with too much water and not enough coolant, or immiscible types of coolant have been mixed in the system.
