Hi all, I bought an 03 plate 1.6 twin spark 147 about a month ago. Didn't pay a lot for it as got it off a friend and only using it until I find a new car I really like(i'm really fussy).
There's a few minor issues with the car(or at least seem minor) and I was just wondering if it's fine just leaving them as they are or it's cheap to fix. The car drives beautifully and runs fine, never had a problem starting it or anything and there's about 110,000 miles on the clock. The minor issues are;
1, The airbag warning light stays on. I have no idea why that would be.
2, When started I get a side light failure warning. It appears that's because the bulb is missing/rolling about in the holder.
3, Sometimes when the lights are on after i've used the breaks I get a rear light failure warning. After using a friend, it appears that what happens is when I break the rear passenger back light goes out when the break light comes on and then once I realise the break after around 2 seconds I get the beeping noise of the light failure, but as that happens the rear light comes back on. It's just really annoying when driving at night to hear that beeping noise everytime I break. It's weird though because some nights it doesn't do it at all and some it will only start doing it halfway through the journey. Is this a wiring issue? Or a faulty bulb?
4, When breaking heavily or going up steep hills I get an engine oil pressure warning. I assume this is just a case of the oil being fairly low so it's moving around and going below the warning level.
Like I said I didn't pay much for this and am only using it as a way to get around for the next couple of months until I find a new car so don't want to be spending much fixing any of the above problem. I understand it's likely to be an MOT failure like that but it's MOT'd until June so I won't have the car by then.
One final question that I know will get laughed at but where's the bonnet release? On my old cars it has always been under the glove compartment but I can't see it anywhere. After a brief look earlier only lever I can see has a steering wheel symbol on it under the steering wheel.
I will try to help you from my experience.
1. Airbag light, these are quite common and its normally the connection under the passenger seat to blame. Disconnect it, give the connections a clean with electrical contact cleaner, and re-attach.
2.sidelight, if the bulb is missing it will throw up the fault on dash, if the bulb is rolling around somewhere in the unit it is probably damaged and needs replacing. Fit a new bulb H6W that should clear it.
3. Sounds like an earthing issue, I would get a garage to look at it.
4. Oil light, have you checked the oil level? Sounds low to me either that or you are going to get through brake pads quickly!
The bonnet realease is behind the plastic trim to the right of where your right leg would be on the accelerator.
Hope this gives you a starting point and gets rid of some of your issues.
