The click is an electrically operated clutch as has been mentioned above. It always makes this noise and is quite normal BUT...
if, when you have switched the a/c on, the clicking keeps happening from time to time (could be quite frequent), this could be a sign that the charge pressure is low (as has also been said above). The air con system has a pressure switch that is designed to prevent a/c operation if the charge pressure is too low or too high (for safety reasons, I presume in the latter case here). This means that there is also the possibility that the "trinary switch" (i.e. the pressure switch) could be malfunctioning. Also worth mentioning that the a/c on my 164 is designed not to operate when the air temperature is quite low (about 3 degrees C IIRC - not sure). I doubt that this is the case right now in October.
