I agree with you, I wouldn't put too much faith in an MOT either.
You should see the state of some of the bits on my dad's MG Midget, and it was sold to him with a new MOT.
But at the same time the undertray could be hiding something that the MOT could well spot that you might of missed, such as a rusty brake pipe, oil leak etc.
The bloke who used to MOT my car would not only do the MOT he would also tell me about other things that he spotted. Quite often he would say "It has passed the MOT, but come and have a look at this...."
You will never be cool driving a Vauxhall.
