Should I stay or should I go?
My beloved 147 2002 Sele has become part of the family, I love her. The Bose stereo is great, she's black with the leather seats and I enjoy the fact that even if that BMW, Merc or Audi in the next lane looks lovely and is way faster than me, I'm still in a cooler car. (well I think so anyway)
But I've been neglecting her service-wise for a couple of years (but have been checking the oil), she's now got 160K kms on the clock. and she really really needs a bucketload of money spent on her to hopefully keep her running reliably for a few more years. At the very least she now needs timing belt, full brake sortout, filters and oil change, one new water hose, possible engine oil leak fix and probably front rollbar bushes. I also suspect the clutch is wearing out (was changed in 2009). I am thinking that is easily $2500 worth, possibly $3500 or more if the clutch needs redoing as well? (parts and labour prices are higher here than in UK!)
I can't bring myself to get a boring 2nd hand Toyota or Mazda 3 type thing, I could survive with maybe a VW Golf TSI I suppose, but would really want another Alfa, likely a newer 147 TwinSpark! I haven't got a big budget so 3K+ is a lot for me to spend on repairs, but I won't get a lot for the car selling privately needing this kind of work, so a trade in at a dealer on a used model is maybe a better option IF I decide to sell. But if I get my car fixed up, I'd hate to then have more pricey repairs needed sooner rather than later just due to the general wearing out of stuff, so it's that gamble either way.
So my question is...
Better the temptress devil you know, or cut your losses, get a younger girl and hope she looks after you?
If you've got $4K to spend on either repairs/maintenance for a 13 year old 147 or $8K for a replacement 2007 era car with half the mileage, what would you do? ($AU)
I'm sure similar kind of thoughts have come up for many here (maybe with higher budgets though), but very interested in any thoughts you have on the topic...
