Knackered Camshaft - Experience and Knowledge needed!

hey guys, my 156 2.0 Twin has just been in to my local specialists for a exhaust bracket replacement, and whilst it was in the mechanic claims that the camshaft seems to be wearing, allegedly he can tell this just from the sound from start up and revving. I asked him how much and is it an urgent repair, but he reckons im ok for now, this has left me uneasy to say the least.

Should i replace the camshaft straight away, should i do both at the same time? and is it worth spending a bit more (Autodelta etc) over standard replacements.

One last thing - The mechanic says i should or will notice a drop in power from lack of compression, but as of yet i haven't, when/if i do, should this be the time to get new Camshafts?

Cheers guys.

Always outnumbered, never outgunned

Well if the cam shaft is worn you certainly won't loose compression. You will however loose power as the valves will open late and close early .
From that alone i would suggest that your mechanic doesn't know what he is talking about.
However, cam shafts can wear, there was someone on her a few months back with that problem.

a worn camshaft gives a rattly sound from the top end thats clattery at idle and louder with revs. like a light knocking sound.

sounds a bit like a diesel does but not as sweet lol

As others said a bit of power loss, but no compression loss at all, as its in the top of the head - well away from the bits that do the compressing!

But so does a worn variator .. and they are more common on an Alfa. So if the diesel sound goes away after a while, that's your baby! Check you oil levels and when the last oil change was done. If the oil is low or getting thin (old), that doesn't help. But a variator change involves the cambelts so not cheap.

Plus the injectors tend to be pretty noisy as well.

The best bet would be to remove the cam cover and have a look. its not a difficult job even for someone with limited mechanic skills. Just make sure you either use gasket cement or use a new cover gasket when putting it back together.

Wear should be fairly obvious, by comparing the cam lobes and feeling for roughness on the lobe surfaces.

It may also be possible to see cam wear through the oil filler hole, if it occurs on lobes 1 and 2 of the inlet cam. Apparetly wear here can be caused by using a metal funnel to top the oil up as the metal funnel can damage the cams case hardening.

You will never be cool driving a Vauxhall.
